La Puna
La Puna

La Puna, which is an impressive space full of light, a clear, blue sky and a brown tapestry where vicuñas, guanacos and suris amble. It is a quiet landscape, the people's customs reflect from time immemorial where magic and reality fuse together into its music and celebrations.

It has the localities of Abra Pampa, La Quiaca, Santa Catalina, Rinconada and Mina Pirquitas. You can also enjoy Laguna de los Pozuelos, which has been declared Natural Monument.

It is an arid plain between 2500 and 4500 mts above sea level, where it is very common to see its inhabitants grazing sheep and llamas protected by Coquena, the good elf of the heights. At night, when the vicuñas, flamingos and suris rest the “black” sky is punched by thousands of stars of amazing brightness, “ a night in La Puna is unforgettable”

The axis of this region is Rio Grande, built in among the colourful hills, natural communication way, today 9 NR.

As in la Puna, the houses look like as if they had the roots in the earth: they are made of adobe, mixed with earth and straw. Settlements of great colonial importance are developed in relation with important pre Hispanic settlements. Today, they are the uncountable remains of this past; ‘pucarás', antigales, cave paintings, etc (which can be visited). Hispanic customs are also in the region, which stand out during the community celebrations, where all the town participates (for example, the worship to Pachamama). The Carnival, in fast cycle between exhuming and burial, is developed in all its steps. You can have access to all the places in this region by car, on tarmac road. Besides, you can go along the same road by bus service (25 regular daily services that link this place. In summer, the road can be temporarily cut by the rains.

Along 9 NR you have access to 52 NR, to reach Purmamarca. Around 400 people inhabit this place stopped in XVII C, at the foot of impressive hills (Cerro de los Siete Colores, Seven Colours Hill). It is found between Grande and Xibi-Xibi rivers, 1259 m above sea level, its peculiar topography and its appearance have given them the metaphorical name of “Silver little cup”. Around “Plaza de Armas”, we can see the Cathedral (1761-65), the Town Council (today provincial police headquarters), the Governor's House (1907-1921). In this place, Belgrano has introduced the national flag to the people, in the balconies of the Town Council (1812), Canónigo Gorriti blessed the flag in the Cathedral.

The flag was donated to the people of Jujuy and, today, it is kept in the Flag's Room at the House of the Provincial Governor. The Governor's House, a French Style palace, is framed by the sculptures of Lola Mora, remarkable artist (1866-1936) and also visionary of the oil exploration in the Northwest.

Other places to visit in the city are Historical Provincial Museum, which is the house where Lavalle was killed in 1841 and Sacro Art Museum, where XVII C paintings brought from Cuzco are kept.
